THE SCIENCE OF HYDRATION
Unlocking the Potential of A-Game Sports Drinks for Athletes
Maintaining proper hydration status has long been a concern for exercising athletes, their coaches, trainers, parents, and other stakeholders. When, how, and with what to hydrate in order to yield and maintain an athlete’s peak performance in sport continue to be critical questions for sports enthusiasts around the world. The business of supplying oral rehydration solutions (ORS) is now entering its 60th year, with the original ORS, Gatorade, being invented in October of 1965. Since that time, however, the topic of maximizing the complex physiologic state of the exercising athlete, has been replete with misinformation about how this might be accomplished, from salt tablets to ergogenic aids, such as caffeine. Nowhere in the sports performance landscape is this more prevalent than in the ORS space. Since 1965, there have been dozens of different ORS products on the market claiming superior formulations and efficacy.
Although it is universally accepted that proper hydration is critically important for the exercising athlete, the physiologic factors affecting such are both numerous and quite complex. Additionally, there are large individual (likely genetic) and situational variances in many of these factors. Some of the internal individual ones are: individual
metabolic and sweat rates, genetic factors, conditioning, medical history, etc., just to name a few. External factors that vary tremendously among individuals include environmental influences such as heat, humidity, and wind, as well as other considerations like type and durations of exercise, intensity of physical output, frequency of participation, etc. Thus, one can easily grasp an approach of “one size fits all” in attempts to accomplish proper hydration for maximal performance in sport will fall short. The widely accepted, preferred and proven method is an individualized hydration plan catered specifically to the athlete, which will undoubtedly provide the best results.
